Chapter Fifteen

Shadow bolted upright in bed. It’s just a bad dream. As though hearing the sound of her own voice would help, she whispered, “Stop thinking about them. Sorren’s not like that.”

The sound of her voice was hollow in the bedroom.

Sorren! Sorren! Sorren!

The name rang in her ears.

She had to see Sorren to prove to herself that he wasn’t like Graywolf. Sorren McKenna would never force himself upon her.

Don’t be silly! It’s late. What will Emma say if you go to Sorren now?

When Shadow realized that she was trying to talk herself out of going to Sorren’s, she knew she’d already made up her mind. She had to see him. Now. Tonight.

In a moment, he pulled the nightgown over her head and threw it to the floor. Shadow took her doeskin dress from the closet and drew it on. It took only a moment more to slip into her moccasins then she was flying out of her room and down the hallway.

Shadow stopped to put a bridle on the big roan gelding. She didn’t bother with a blanket or saddle. She’d never required a saddle before.

“What in tarnation are you doin’?”

Shadow leaped head first onto the roan. When her stomach was against the horse’s broad back, she spun sideways to get properly seated. She pinched the roan’s ribs with her knees.

“Hey! I’m askin’ you a ques—”

Shadow shot a look at the sleepy old man in a union suit who tended the Weatherlys’ personal riding stock. She saw the recognition spread across his beard-stubbled face.

“Sorry. Didn’t recognize ya at first,” he mumbled.

“Hee-yaa!” Shadow shouted, her moccasined heels hitting the roan’s flanks.

Horse and rider shot out of the stables at full gallop. Shadow leaned over the horse’s neck, her hair, like the roan’s mane, dancing in the wind as the pounding hooves thudded against the rich green pasture land, eating up the ground.
